Makes 2 large servings.

The best part of waking up...is a green smoothie in your cup 🎶 Okay, okay, that's not entirely true, but it is a great way to start the day.

All catchy jingles aside, I do love our habit of having a green smoothie for breakfast. It's packed with greens, fruits, vitamins and nutrients. It's the perfect jolt to getting your day started. While every day's recipe changes slightly based on what's in season and in our fridge, this is our favorite combination.

What You Need

1/2 cup organic orange juice

1/2 unsweetened almond milk

2 cups fresh spinach

1/2 cup frozen organic mangos

1 cup frozen broccoli

1/2 frozen banana

1 tablespoon spirulina

1 tablespoon wheatgrass powder

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1 scoop vegan protein

What To Do

I once read that putting liquids into your blender first (before any hard foods) will help extend the life of your blender. Is it true? I have no idea, but I do it every day just in case. So first, pour the 1/2 cup orange juice and 1/2 cup almond milk into your blender.

Then toss in 2 cups of fresh greens. I love fresh spinach, but we also use the Power Greens mix, or a combo of fresh kale and spinach. If you use fresh kale, I'd recommend removing the thick stalks, as they can have a very tree-like flavor.

Now comes all the frozen ingredients. Any of these can really be used fresh as well, I just love the smoothie when it's extra cold so the more frozen ingredients, the better. Frozen broccoli, mangos and half of a banana are my favorite combo. The broccoli may sound weird, but when mixed with the fruits and the orange juice, you really don't even taste it. It's a great way to get some extra protein, vitamin C, vitamin K, as well as being anti-inflammatory and aiding in detoxification.

Then I top it with a tablespoon of spirulina, a tablespoon of wheatgrass and a tablespoon of chia seeds. If you haven't used spirulina before, get it. It's a blue-green algae that has a ridiculous amount of health benefits. It smells kind of like fish food, but doesn't really taste like much, especially when added to the smoothie. We buy the Imlakesh Organics Organic Spirulina Powder from Sprouts, which I love because it is pretty large and comes in a nice jar. Spirulina is also great because it gives your smoothie this awesome deep green color.

I also like to add wheatgrass powder to my smoothies because it's high in iron, which is important since I don't eat meat. Like spuralina, it's also packed with a ton of vitamins and nutrients. The two balance each other out well because they are high in different vitamins, giving you a really well-rounded punch of vitamins.

I like tossing in chia seeds because they give a really nice, light nutty flavor, they thicken up the smoothie, and have a ton of protein.

And lastly, I top it with vegan protein. This is optional, especially since so many of the previous ingredients have protein, but since my diet isn't very high-protein overall, I like to make sure my first meal of the day covers my protein requirements.

That's it! Turn the blender on for about a minute and breakfast is served. It's literally so easy, so nutritious, and so good. Enjoy!
